In our parish 46 children have celebrated First Communions over the last two weeks. 100 people prepared for Marriage. We have just seen a new Archbishop installed on Thursday in Westminster Cathedral – Archbishop Vincent. And now we prepare for our international Mass next Sunday, the Feast of Pentecost, the birth of the church; the feast of the Holy Apostles at last getting about and doing what the Lord asked them to do, empowered by the Holy Spirit. There is much to celebrate.
As a first attempt to get to know people, the new archbishop is having a Mass in 5 different parts of the diocese within the next few weeks. For us that Mass will be on this Thursday (28th) in Our Lady and St Joseph, Balls Pond Rd, Dalston at 7.30pm. He will meet with all the clergy of this eastern part of the Diocese at 5pm before the Mass. I know it is very far away for us from Pimlico and we will have opportunities to see him at the Cathedral but I just want you to know he is immediately making the effort to get out and about among the parishes. His name is now being used in every Mass ….we pray for Benedict our Pope, Vincent our Bishop…..
The painting of the Church should finish this week and then we hope to sand and reseal the church floor – that will take two weeks more. I know it is depriving many people of dropping into the church for a prayer during the day as well as prolonging the celebration of the weekday Masses down in the hall, but it will be worth it!
Thank you for your patience.
A case of swine flu has been reported in a school in this area so it is important we are all careful and exercise “cough etiquette” – covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and disposing it as soon as possible in a bin. If there were to be a very serious outbreak in this country, it is most likely this would occur in the autumn.
There are now 101 confirmed cases in the UK – 92 in England, eight in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland. There are ten new confirmed cases in London, one in East of England, and three in South East of England.
Agreements have been signed between the UK Government and vaccine manufacturers to secure supplies of up to 90 million doses of pre-pandemic H1N1 vaccine before a pandemic begins.
The deals signed between Secretary of State for Health, GlaxoSmithKline, and Baxter, will enable production of pre-pandemic vaccine to begin as soon as possible. The agreements could provide enough vaccine to protect the most vulnerable in our population before a pandemic is likely to arrive, without affecting our supply of seasonal flu vaccine.

Passage Volunteers Urgently Needed The Passage, next to Westminster Cathedral, is a wonderful charity run by the Daughters of Charity serving the homeless. They urgently need volunteers, in particular someone with some office skills who could work a few hours twice a week. This would be ideal for a retired person.
